General Lyndon Buckingham in Germany

General Lyndon Buckingham and Commissioner Bronwyn Buckingham energised the Germany, Lithuania and Poland Territorial Congress, and inspired the congregation with their sermons, personal testimonies and relatability.

‘I want to be part of a Salvation Army of people who pray enthusiastically, praise God, proclaim the good news of the gospel and bear witness to what God is doing in their lives and in the world. I want to be part of a Salvation Army of holy people who serve others and inspire them with their example. And I want to be part of a Salvation Army that is passionate about making this world a better place and expanding the Kingdom of God. I am asking you: are you in?’

This is how General Lyndon Buckingham concluded his final sermon in Siegen, Germany. For the congregation assembled in the Siegerlandhalle, there was only one answer to his question: Yes! Many people flocked to the mercy seat immediately to show their willingness to ‘be in’ as well as to pray with the General.

Growing in faith

The Sunday morning Holiness Meeting was a highlight of the General and Commissioner Bronwyn’s four-day visit to Germany (from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 September), which included officers councils, Covenant and Commissioning, and an evening of praise and joy that featured the popular German Christian rock band, Koenige & Priester. The Buckinghams inspired those present with their sermons and personal testimonies, but also with their highly approachable manner.

The topic of growth played a key role in all meetings. How can we grow in faith? How can we strengthen our covenant with God? How can we expand the Kingdom of God as individuals and as a movement? And how can The Salvation Army continue to grow in order to be joyfully fruitful and faithful? The General and Commissioner Bronwyn generously shared their thoughts and godly insights concerning these questions.

The best life decision you can make

Two new officers were commissioned during the Buckinghams’ visit. The General blessed the new lieutenants and congratulated them on their decision to fully serve the Lord. ‘This is the best life decision you can make,’ he said. ‘Your covenant with God is a recognition of what he can do with and through you.’ He encouraged the congregation to follow the example of ‘the very newest officers of The Salvation Army’ and to be God‘s witnesses, his hands, his feet and his voice in the world.

During their visit, the international leaders inspired many people in the territory and created a spirit of optimism. ‘I am going home with a happy heart, feeling motivated and invigorated,’ said one participant, summarising the general mood. ‘The community of faith that I experienced with the General and the Commissioner gives me strength for my ministry.’

Territorial Commander Colonel Dean Pallant thanked the General and Commissioner Bronwyn for their inspirational visit, and bid everyone farewell with a challenge to everyone from Jesus: I have called you to go and bear fruit (John 15:16).
